石舞台古墳とキトラ古墳（奈良県明日香村）

石舞台古墳は、古墳時代後期の古墳で国の特別史跡に指定されており、埋葬者としては蘇我馬子が有力視されています。
キトラ古墳は、7世紀末～8世紀初頭頃に造られたと考えられており、埋葬者は不明ですが、石室内には四神、十二支、天文図、日月の壁画があります。四神は、東壁に青龍、南壁に朱雀、西壁に白虎、北壁に玄武が描かれ、我が国で四神の図像が全て揃うのはキトラ古墳壁画のみです。四神の下には、獣頭人身の十二支が描かれおり、子、丑、寅、午、戌、亥の6体が確認されています。そして、天井には天文図と東に金箔で太陽が、西に銀箔で月が描かれています。この天文図は、本格的な中国式星図としては現存する世界最古の例で、壁画5面は国宝に指定されています。

Ishbutai Kofun and Kitora Kofun (Asuka Village, Nara)

The Ishibutai Kofun is an ancient burial mound from the late Kofun period and has been designated as a special historic site of the country. Soga Umako is considered to be the most likely burial.
The Kitora kofun burial mound is thought to have been built around the end of the 7th century to the beginning of the 8th century, and the burials are unknown. There are murals of national treasures, the four gods, the zodiac, astronomical map with the sun and moon in the stone chamber. The four gods are depicted as blue dragon on the east wall, vermilion bird on the south wall, white tiger on the west wall, and snake-turtle on the north wall, and the mural paintings of the Kitora tomb is the only one having all of four gods’ iconographies in Japan. Under the four gods, the 12 zodiacs of the beast head and human body are depicted, and six figures have been identified: the Mouse, the Ox, the Tiger, the Horse, the Dog, and the Boar. On the ceiling is an astronomical map with the sun in gold leaf in the east and the moon in silver leaf in the west, which is the oldest surviving authentic Chinese-style star map in the world.
